[To be used in conjunction with Case UA 2005-014 - A Clash of Cultures] This 12.12 minute video / DVD case study is about the company, Levene. It provides an historical account of the emergence of an iconic New Zealand family retailing firm: from a single store in Auckland’s Karangahape Road to a 50-store retail chain. In the mid-1980s, the transformation at Levene caused the firm to become not only a market leader in the lifestyle category in New Zealand, but also to become a benchmark for international retailers. A question that emerges from Levene is one of culture. As the firm collapsed after its sale to entrepreneur, Murray Bolton, any analysis must explore how the company culture, which previously supported innovation so strongly, was progressively eroded.
