The Harry Hopewell case series explores the nature of entrepreneurship and wealth creation, opportunity recognition and assessment, personal venturing, business planning, and the challenges of ‘self-employment’. While developed for use at the MBA programme level, the series may prove effective with mature learners in general and, potentially, advanced undergraduates. The three cases combined provide a vehicle for development by students of a personal venture concept and business plan term project. Used independently, the (A) case examines multiple embedded career, employment, employment law and human resource issues: Harry Hopewell presents the situation facing two experienced managers, one of whose employment unexpectedly has been terminated. The Quest (B) is a personalisation of the situation and circumstances to the individual reader-student, as actor, while the Personal Best (C) presents a formal term project assignment for a “personal best” entrepreneurial venture.
