This case describes the exceptional growth of a small New Zealand firm with a staff of three and only one product, Aunt Betty’s steamed pudding, a niche-market, seasonal product with limited potential. In just 12 years, Old Fashioned Foods became a $150 million fast moving, consumer goods marketer with a portfolio of over 400 products on New Zealand supermarket shelves, a market leader in the United Kingdom and Australia in its category, and the winner of the 2000 Supreme Exporter of the Year Award (judged by Trade New Zealand).
