Abstract

Michael Hill was born in Whangarei in 1938 and learnt about the art of selling while working at his uncle's jewellery shop for 23 years. He launched his own shop in 1979 and 30 years later Michael Hill International had over 230 stores in four countries and an annual turnover of over NZ$400 million, with ambitious plans to open 1000 stores internationally by 2020. This case describes the evolution of the company, focusing particularly on Michael Hill International's business growth model. The purpose of the case is to explore how and why a New Zealand company should expand overseas and what entry strategies are best suited to the international retail marketplace.
